Diagnosing & Treating Strep Throat Online

Strep throat is the more commonly known term for group A streptococcus bacteria. Strep throat is one of the most common conditions doctors on TelaCare treat. Doctors can help determine if you have strep throat and if treatment is needed, or if a referral to a specialist is required.

Our platform has an image upload feature that is extremely helpful for both providers and patients. You can take and upload a picture of your throat, helping our physicians can get a precise, detailed look before the visit even begins.

During a video consult on TelaCare your doctor will ask you a series of targeted questions to determine if your symptoms point to strep throat. Then your provider will proceed to determine the best treatment plan for you. Your provider may recommend in-person examination by a specialist if this is needed. Your treatment plan is based on the duration and severity of your symptoms and your medical history. Along with these questions, the doctor may ask you to take your temperature, shine a light on the back of your throat, touch the lymph nodes in your neck and report what you feel.

Once a diagnosis has been made, your doctor will go over the risks and benefits of the various treatment plans. Depending on the cause and severity of the infection, your treatment plan may include:

  • Antibiotics - if they are a part of your treatment plan, they can:
    • Relieve a sore throat
    • Make it less likely that it will spread to others
    • Help prevent complications
  • Until the antibiotics start to work, some home remedies include:
    • Over-the-counter pain relievers
    • Rest
    • Gargling
    • Lozenges and hard candy
    • Fluids

Note: To assess the severity of your infection the doctor may ask for your temperature, if possible it would be best to take your temperature before starting the call.

How long does the flu last?

The flu typically lasts about one to two weeks. Severe symptoms will usually set in after two or three days. Symptoms of weakness, dry cough and fatigue can linger for three to seven days.

What are the signs of strep throat?

There are many symptoms of strep throat including, but not limited to:

  • Severe and sudden sore throat
  • Cough, sneezing or other cold symptoms
  • White or yellow spots or coating on the throat or tonsils
  • Fever over 101 °F (38.3 °C)
  • Swollen tonsils or lymph nodes in the neck

Can you get strep throat without tonsils?

Yes, you can. There is this misconception that once you get your tonsils removed, you’re immune to disease like strep, but this is not true. Your throat’s structure is what makes the difference. The back of your throat is surrounded by bands of tissue called Waldeyer’s ring. If these tissues get infected by the streptococcus bacteria, it can cause strep throat.

Can you get strep throat multiple times?

Yes. Some people tend to get strep throat more than others and a common way to get strep again is if it is not cured after the first course of antibiotic treatment. If you have had strep throat 7 or more times in one year, your physician will most likely recommend performing a tonsillectomy.

 Does TelaCare offer refunds?

No, All sales are final, and no refunds will be offered or accepted on services purchased from TelaCare.  Can I get a prescription online?

Yes, in general you can get a prescription online. There is support for this nationwide, however there are several exceptions.

I do not have a smartphone or computer, is there another way to talk with a doctor?

Yes, by dialing 1-800-317-0280 you can connect with agents who can assist you with whatever it is you’re looking for, including enrollment, connecting with a doctor, or answering any technical support questions.

 Is strep throat contagious?

Strep throat is highly contagious, as it is caused by bacteria. Strep throat can be spread when someone sneezes, coughs or even breathes because tiny droplets containing the bacteria go into the air and then are easily inhaled by other people. If you have strep, it is recommended to avoid kissing or sharing dishes to avoid spreading the disease.

Illness or injury can strike at any time. TelaCare helps you get back on your feet, no matter where you are or the time of day. You can see a doctor online for a range of issues, from minor illnesses and injuries, symptoms from a chronic condition, or to address general health concerns. Here are a few reasons people go online to see a doctor:

    • I feel like I should probably see a doctor, but can’t really fit it into my over-booked schedule.
    • It’s difficult for me to get a doctor’s appointment.
    • I’m not sure if I should go to the ER or not.
    • My doctor’s office is closed and I don’t want to go to an urgent care clinic or hospital
    • I just moved and don’t know any doctors in my area.
    • I just need a second opinion.
    • I’m between jobs and have no coverage.
    • I have a question about a loved-one’s health and would like some advice.

Do I need to schedule an appointment?

TelaCare is designed for on-demand care so no appointment is necessary. After you register and log in to TelaCare, the next available doctor will see you. If no one is available, you will be placed in a "waiting room" and notified by text message once a doctor is available. If you need to have an appointment at a later time you can select a time that is convenient for you and the doctor will call you then as well.
