 What is the difference between the stomach flu and food poisoning?

Stomach flu and food poisoning are very similar conditions, while initial symptoms typically include fever and diarrhea. But a stomach virus can take 24 to 48 hours to develop and can have other symptoms, including:

  • Nausea
  • Stomach or intestinal cramps
  • Joint stiffness
  • Weight loss

Food poisoning symptoms can begin to develop 2 to 6 hours after food consumption and other symptoms can include:

  • Fatigue
  • Muscle aches
  • Headache

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Thirst
